Secrets of the Bold and the Beautiful Lip

I’m not one to shy away from a bold lip and, thankfully, make-up pro Liz Castellanos indulged me when I was filling in at E! News Now this week. Ever a student of beauty, I took note of how she built up a bold, beautiful pout.

Fill it in. Granted your lips are properly moisturized and flake-free, put down the lip liner and pick up a chubby lipstick pencil. Liz knew that I am super-cray for NARS’s Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Sex Machine (which she’s used on me before) and colored in my entire mouth with it.

Mix it up. With the wrong end of a lip brush, Liz then scooped out a little bit each of N34 Natural and 37 Intense (last two from the left, below) from a Make Up Forever palette onto the back of her hand, blended, and expertly applied over Sex Machine.

Voila! With a small lip brush, build up color a little bit at a time to create a perfectly bright pucker, making sure you create an outline of lips as you would with lip liner. I noticed that she didn’t have me blot before shuffling me off to set which I guess isn’t necessary if you’ve applied justthe right amount (again, build it up gradually). In order to make sure nothing got on my teeth, I used this age-old trick. The color stayed and stayed with only a few touch-ups in-between.

Slightly obsessed! Nabbed MAC’s Cremesheen lipstick in Ravishing thanks to Back to MAC. Back to MAC is the brand’s recycling program where customers can trade in six product empties for a free eyeshadow, Lipglass or lipstick.

It was between this and (a very Betty Draper-inspired) Vegas Volt, the latter of which was a little too pink for me. Despite being a Cremesheen color (read: has a more sheer finish), Ravishing packs a clean peachy-coral punch. Can’t wait to rock this with simple black winged eyeliner and peach blush. I just can’t get enough! Make Up Forever’s Rouge Artist Intense 40 lipstick is the perfect shade of bright, summery and borderline-neon orange. Worn it’s actually much brighter than how it appears in pictures. The one thing I’m not into: the overwhelmingly old-fashioned “lipsticky” taste it leaves on the mouth.

Prep lips by scrubbing them with a gentle exfoliator or by rubbing wet toothbrush over them and applying a thin layer of balm before putting this hot shade on straight from the tube. If you’re careful enough, no lip liner required! I like keeping the rest of my makeup bronzey and subtle so 40’s intense hue really pops. View high resolution

Oscar de la Renta to Launch Nail/Lipstick Collection

And from the looks of it, will speak directly to the greige (or greige-esque) lover in me. Story here.

Not an uncommon find in my bathroom, unfortch.

Amber Heard Stole My Lipstick (Sort Of)

Actress Amber Heard rocked NARS’s Schiap lipstick to the NYC premiere of ‘The Rum Diary.’ I raved about this shade (which looks more hot pink on me; hot fuschia on her) previously. See ladies and drag queens: it’s never the WRONG season to rock a bright lip.

Hot Mother Puckers

There are few trends I adore more than the neon lip trend, so I recently picked up two tubes of the stuff: Schiap by NARS - a bright pink color that took trips to 3 different Sephoras to find - and #40 by Make Up Forever, a bright orange hue. When I’m feeling brave, I’ll pair this with some lightly bronzed eyes, brown eyeliner and just a swipe of bronzer on the cheeks.
